Family showdown came in opening round of Pro Stock eliminations of New England Nationals at Epping, N.H.

A father-son match-up in the NHRA Pro Stock class isn’t really anything new. Fans have seen the Grays (Johnny and sons Shane and Jonathan and dad Shane and son Tanner), McGahas (dad Chris and Mason), the Johnsons (dad Warren and Kurt).

But Sunday’s first round of eliminations at the NHRA New England Nationals at Epping, N.H., saw a Cuadra family match-up that generated a little extra buzz.

Fernando Cuadra Sr. and Fernando Cuadra Jr., of Leon, Mexico, had more at stake than bragging rights. Fernando Sr. agreed that if his son posted a better reaction time and won the race on the New England Dragway quarter-mile, as well, he would give the 26-year-old (the eldest of his three drag-racing sons) a Ford F-150 pick-up truck.

Fernando Jr. did what he had to do to earn that truck.

He cut an outstanding .021-second reaction time (a perfect light is .000) and defeated his dad by .074 seconds in their first head-to-head showdown (6.594 seconds at 208.62 mph to 6.681, 202.79).

“He wanted to play with the leather interior, but I gave him the Gator Mat floors,” Fernando Sr. said. “Congratulations, my son.”

Cuadra Jr. registered an eye-opening .003-second light to knock off the class’ top qualifier, Dallas Glenn, in Round 2. But Glenn didn’t give him a truck.

Cuadra lost in the semifinals to eventual runner-up Aaron Stanfield.
