After the birth of my second son, Gus, in 2017, I found myself looking for ways to create safe playing areas for him in our living spaces at our home in Beckenham, south London. I struggled to find playmats which weren’t primary coloured with the alphabet on. I couldn’t find one, so decided to manufacture my own. I launched Gus + Beau in 2019.
My background is e-commerce. Before Gus + Beau, I had worked in online retail for over 15 years. I’ve worked with some incredible firms, including Liberty, and I worked at notonthehighstreet.com. It was there that I realised I wanted my own business. The passion from the retailers we worked with was infectious.
We had a very good 2020 and thanks to some amazingly supportive women, including Stacey Solomon and Vogue Williams, the business is doing well. Last year was more of a struggle. The cost of importing has risen hugely and there’s no sign of that improving. However, we are going to be launching new products later this year.
I often get told: “You’re so lucky to have your own company.” But it’s not luck, it’s hard work and research. You also need a reason that gets you through the tough times. I would never have started my business if it wasn’t for my first son, Beau, who was stillborn. He and my other sons are my inspiration.
